how a realtor should approach buying a domain name

Article by Nathaneal Mohr
A lot of realtors will use their own name or their companies name as the domain name for their website. But the truth is that that ego focused approach isn’t always the best marketing approach for realtors. The reason that kind of marketing isn’t helping you online is because its missing a few key ingredients when it comes to choosing a domain name.
I would recommend that you try your best to use the primary area you are in… and the word real estate, realtor, real estate agents or realty. This is what is called a search friendly domain name.
A search friendly domain domain name, is a domain that consist of the words but not just any words. These words are the ones your buyers or sellers are using to search on the internet. This is important is because every search engine will always have to consider the fact that many people will be searching for the exact URL that they want to go to when searching online.
So when you include the area and other keywords that relate back to the real estate services… it makes it easier for people and search engines know what your website is about.
What do you do if the exact match domain for the real estate term you want and city isn’t available? Well you just have to find new ways to get creative. Of course don’t be so creative that your domain is confusing or hard to remember. Many smart real estate marketers put their primary city, the word real estate and then another word that fits into their personal brand. So it looks like YourCityRealEstateYourBrand.com
A couple tips to remember if you have to get creative when investing in a domain name.
Stay away from.info.name and so on. Because most of these uncommon top-level domains are seen as spam related websites. This won’t help your credibility.
Stay away from names longer than twenty characters if you can. Your city or town might be something like Nashville or Sacramento making it hard to include a city name and the words Real Estate in the domain but do your best. The shorter it is the easier it will be for people to find you if they see the domain in an offline, like a sign or a post card or something.
Try to us the state abbreviation after the city or area and before the real estate focused term if the city or area alone isn’t available.
If you already have a domain name that has been around for a while; you don’t have to change it to be successful. Believe it or not the age of a domain also plays a factor when it comes to search engine optimization. The domain tips we just covered are more important if you are just starting out with your online marketing or if your domain name doesn’t have a lot of brand recognition.
No matter what domain name you invest in, buying a domain name is just the first step getting clients on line.
